Message From Norbert Carpenter Director Public Schools Branch

The past few days have been a very challenging time for our school community and in particular those at East Wiltshire Intermediate. I want to provide you an update on the first day back and give some insight into our plans going forward.

It was an emotional morning at East Wiltshire Intermediate. A significant number of people came out to show their support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ students and staff at the school. It was a very peaceful and positive expression.

Student Services staff were available at the school all day to offer additional support to students. Our primary focus over the coming days is supporting our students. No students should ever feel unsafe in our schools. The Public Schools Branch is committed to ensuring our schools are a positive place where students can learn and thrive.

Along with some of my colleagues at the Public Schools Branch, I met with teachers and support staff before classes started. It was very clear that staff are upset by some of the assertions made regarding last week. The staff and administration at East Wiltshire have actively promoted diversity initiatives and care a great deal about their students.

As a school system, we always try to look for the educational opportunity in a situation and this is no different. We have contracted a third-party diversity and inclusion consultant to review the events at East Wiltshire and provide recommendations not only for the school but for our entire system. Public Schools Branch policies are in place to help all staff and students be protected and feel safe at school. Obviously, this is an ongoing effort and there is still work to be done in this area. We look forward to learning more from the third-party review.
