Friday, Oct. 30, 2020 – Day 1

Student/Sports Fees:

Birchwood Spirit Week:

    • Friday: Orange/Black or Halloween Costumes
      • It may not be Halloween but dressing up two days in a row would be awesome!

Field Hockey:

  • Meeting at break in Science lab,  next to Mme Walsh’s room, to finalize orders for sweaters. Bring your uniforms!!

Volleyball:

  • A Girls: Possibly the most dedicated team at the school had their playoff run cut short last night in Montague.  The dedication and commitment to volleyball all these girls have shown this year is inspiring!  This is the first time Birchwood has ever entered two teams into PEISAA league play and we’re already looking forward to bigger and better things next season.  See you at Volleyball Club!  
  • AA Girls: Practice at 4:30.  Please remember – you must leave the school and return for practice at 4:30.
  • AA Boys Volleyball: no practice today.  Next practice Monday at 3.
  • Club: 3:00 – 4:00

Hockey Academy:

  • Registration sheets and payment are due today. Pass it in to Mr. Brioux.

Band:

  • All grade 7 Brass players meet in the band room  for a 12:10 start today.  Early morning band begins this coming week for grades 8 and 9.  The Grade 9 woodwinds meet on Tuesday at 7:45am. Grade 8 woodwinds meet on Thursday at 7:45.

Library: 

  • Sign up today at break in the library for the ‘House of Writers’ group that will be starting this coming Tuesday after school from 3-3:45.
  • Students be sure to check in with your LA teachers regarding the Book Trailer contest happening. Get your trailers in to Mrs. Gairns before December 14th for a chance to win some great prizes. 

Birchwood is starting their GSA Club next week:

  • Birchwood Intermediate will hold its first Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) group meeting on Monday, November 2, 2020 at 12:05 pm in Room 310, Mr. Butler’s class on the grade 7 floor.  A GSA is a student run and teacher supported club that works to create welcoming, caring, respectful and safe spaces for students in the LGBTQ2S+ community and their allies at Birchwood.  The purpose of a GSA is for students to meet, do fun activities, socialize and support one another in a way that is inclusive of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, and many other interests.  This club will meet twice a month and is open to all students at Birchwood Intermediate.  Please speak to Mrs. Munn or Mrs. Forbes if you have any questions about the club.

    • Congrats to the girls on winning their first playoff game in a close match against Ecole La Belle Cloche.  The match went 5 sets and the Cobras won the final set 16-14. 
    • Practice at 3 and quarter finals tomorrow at Montague Intermediate at 5pm
  • AA Girls:
    • The girls lost a nail biter in 5 sets vs QC. 
    • Practice at 6.  Playoff schedule tba.
  • AA Boys Volleyball:
    • The boys tested EWS last eve but came up a bit short.  All sets were super close and the boys played well. 
    • Practice at 3 and playoff schedule tba.

Soccer:

  • AA Girls Soccer:
    • The AA Girls made history over the weekend, winning the PEISAA Provincial Championships for the first time since 2007.  The game ended 0-0 after regulation play and went into double overtime and 5 rounds of penalty kicks.  Alex Newson scored but the game was still tied at 1.  Next up was sudden death penalty kicks.  Lucy Power scored and Lauren MacEachern made the save to secure the win!  Player of the game was Lauren.  All girls made a huge impact on this year’s team.  They played cohesively and supported one another from day 1.   Extra special congrats and good luck to our graduating Gr 9 players: Akari MacVicar, Ryan McAlduff, Rayann Ferguson and Faith Gray.
  • AA Boys  Soccer: The boys won 3-0 over SIS to win the bronze medal at Saturday’s provincials.  Arun scored one goal and Matt MacLean put the win away with two goals, earning the Player of the Game award.  Good luck to the Grade 9s next  year and congrats on a good season.

  • We have students working away on their book trailers. The contest is open until December 14th.Today is Canadian School library day. Soccer:

  • Guidelines for Saturday’s finals :2020 Provincials Spectator Guidelines
      • Each player is permitted 2 guests
      • You must sign in at the entrance of the Zone for your team
      • No bleachers available and must bring own chair
      • Must physical distance while watching
      • NO washrooms available – NO going on the field
      • Any pictures would be taken outside the venue
      • Must exit the venue when game and brief medal ceremony is completed
      • Plan to arrive for tomorrow’s game ready to warm up no later than 11:30.

Field Hockey:  

  • Girls will play in the Bronze medal game next Tuesday at 4:00pm. Big shootout to Marcy Ives who was a rockstar in nets yesterday!!  Practice Monday 3:00-4:15 at UPEI.

Hockey Academy:
